The last rites of Saroj Khan will be peformed at Malvani in Malad, Mumbai, news agency ANI reported.1New Delhi:
Veteran choreographer Saroj Khan died this morning in Mumbai after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She was 71.
The three-time National Award winner was being treated in the Guru Nanak Hospital since June 20 after she complained of breathing issues. The mandatory COVID-19 test done at the hospital showed a negative result.
“She passed away due to cardiac arrest at around 2.30 am at the hospital,” Saroj Khan’s nephew Manish Jagwani told news agency PTI.
Tributes for the veteran choreographer poured in from Bollywood, where she choreographed over 2,000 songs in a career spanning over four decades.
“I’m devastated by the loss of my friend and guru, Saroj Khan,” tweeted Madhuri Dixit, who was the star of several iconic dance songs, choreographed by Saroj Khan.
Actor Akshay Kumar, who was one of the first ones to condole Saroj Khan’s death on Twitter, described her as someone who “made dance look easy almost like anybody can dance, a huge loss for the industry.”
Most notably, Khan worked on tapping into the female sensuality on screen without sexualising them for the audiences, which has seen a reversal in the last decade in Hindi films and music videos. In Sridevi’s track Main Naagin Tu Sapera, one can see the beginning of a trend that stayed with Masterji until her last choreographed Bollywood song Tabah Ho Gaye in Kalank (2019). A look at her intricately choreographed dance sequences and one can see that the camera operates from a distance, always, focusing on the frame of the performing artist and not just closeups of their various body parts like pelvis, chest and legs, especially females. The camera never got too close to the heroines and in turn the viewers saw and enjoyed from a distance, like an on-stage performance.
Actor Salman Khan and choreographer Saroj Khan, who worked in films like Biwi Ho Toh Aisi (1988) and Andaz Apna Apna (1994), will work together again. According to a report in Mid-Day, after the veteran choreographer complained that the industry doesn’t give her work anymore, Salman met her and promised to give her work in his future projects.

Saroj, whose pairing with Madhuri Dixit led to magic onscreen in films like Ek Do Teen (Tezaab) and Choli Ke Peechey (Khalnayak), had reportedly said that the industry had stopped giving her work. According to the report, when Salman got to know of it, he asked her to meet him.
